Nice engages Lilongwe vendors on elections
National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has encouraged vendors from various markets in Lilongwe to participate in the September 16 2025 General Election.
Speaking on Saturday during an awareness campaign at Tsoka Market, Nice Lilongwe Urban programme officer Hajira Ali said they wanted to take electoral information to informal markets where many people lack access to civic education.
“This is a reminder for people to complete the process they started, such as registration and verification of details. They should go out in large numbers to vote for a candidate of their choice on September 16,” she said.

Ali also cautioned the vendors against political violence, stressing the importance of tolerance during the campaign period.
“Freedom comes with responsibility. Let us be ambassadors of peace during this electoral season,” she said.
Tsoka Market chairperson Rayson Chinunga commended Nice Trust for the timely initiative.
He said this was a rare opportunity for traders to access credible electoral information.
“Your visit has helped us understand the electoral process and timelines. The market is busy and we don’t follow electoral messages on radio or television,” said Chinunga.
Nice Trust conducted the awareness in Area 22, Biwi Township, Tsoka and Mchesi markets, encouraging people to take part in all stages of the electoral process.
John Numero, a resident from Biwi Township, asked his fellow residents to stay away from political violence.
“In recent times, Lilongwe has become a hotspot of political violence. People need to stop the malpractice to ensure a free and fair election,” he said.
Malawi Electoral Commission is expected to open the campaign period on July 14 ahead of the September 16 polls.
Nice Trust civic education activities are running under Boma Lathu Project with funding from the European Union.
